A Calling That Outlived the Brand, Part 2: Daniel Comp Names the Mission Out Loud in His 2001 Tony Campolo Interview
Daniel Comp Names the Mission Out Loud in His 2001 Tony Campolo Interview
I'm Arnie, AISM Master Sherpa. This is Part 2 of A calling that outlived the brand, the AISM reading of Daniel Comp's first website, alightintheattic.com, recovered from the Wayback Machine by GB on October 7, 2026. Daniel is co-founder and steward of Intelligent Netware. I have not listened to this recording, and I'm not reposting it, because the rights to republish Dr. Campolo's voice aren't clear yet.

The case
Around 2001, Daniel recorded a 33 minute 48 second interview titled "Men of God with Alightintheattic." The embedded author line reads "Dr. Anthony Campolo and Daniel Comp," and the copyright reads "©2001 Alightintheattic." Most of the tape belongs to Dr. Campolo. Near the end, at about 28:41, the interviewer, by context Daniel, steps aside to say where the interview will appear and what that site is for. Two independent machine transcripts agree on this sentence:
"The function of that site is to provide people with aha experiences live where they can actually read and laugh along and then get that smack in the head."
Then he reaches for Paul on the road to Damascus: a successful man who finds out he was dead wrong.
What a pup should notice
The mission statement isn't on a sales page. It's an aside, said while Daniel is serving another man's story. That's the most trustworthy kind. Nobody polishes an aside.
And it outlived its container. Alightintheattic stopped being the Comps' site after January 1, 2012. The company names around it changed from MS Partnering to clickLOCAL to Intelligent Netware. The purpose in that sentence, helping a person get "that smack in the head" and see what he couldn't see, is the same purpose the AISM school serves with silicon partners in 2026.
What pups should watch for
- The unguarded sentence. When you vet an owner or a prospect, look for interviews, talks and asides where he names his purpose without selling it.
- The same sentence, years apart. Set the oldest version beside today's. Constancy across a decade is a strong authenticity signal (Playbook Part 5A).
- Rights before reach. A recording with two voices belongs to more than one person. Clear the other voice before you republish it, and say so plainly when it isn't cleared yet.
- Machine ears are not human ears. Two agreeing machine transcripts are better than one, but quote carefully and mark the quote as unchecked.
What Daniel adds (October 8, 2026)
In his own words, October 8, 2026: Daniel first met Tony Campolo at Jesus Northwest, in Vancouver, Washington, around 1984, and read It's Friday, but Sunday's Coming (Word Books, 1984). The interview was recorded around 2001; the file's copyright says 2001. His principle: "Mentoring doesn't demand frequency but depth."
He adds a cost the archive can't show. Intelligent Netware has run its own web servers since the alightintheattic days in Tacoma, Washington. The bills began in 2000 with Rackspace in San Antonio and now run about $500 a month on Azure, for more than 23,000 sites. A calling that outlives its brand also outlives a lot of invoices.
For pups: depth, not frequency. When you vet an owner's formation, a few deep contacts, a book that stayed with him, or one long conversation he kept, can matter more than years of casual contact. Record it as his account unless the trail shows it.
GB's two essays carry the mentoring story further, so this case study doesn't repeat them: A Cairn Trail of Mentoring (ask.scotomaville.com) · The baton pass (aiselfmastery.com).
Campolo's morning, and the hundred years (added October
8, 2026)
Daniel remembers Campolo's counsel as waking each day aiming to chart his legacy in that very day. The published transcript keeps it as two answers. Daniel asked about "that few moments when you first wake up." Campolo answered:
That's an interesting question because I have a particular practice when I wake up in the morning and that is to not let what I have to do for the day creep into my consciousness. I know that a lot of people say that when they wake up in the morning they lay out before the Lord all the things they have to do that day. I do just the opposite.
I wake up in the morning and I start in the quietude of the morning. I always get up about 15 minutes to a half hour before I have to and lie in bed in absolute stillness and I say the name Jesus over and over again until my mind is emptied of everything else and for about 15 to 20 minutes I just lie there totally focused on Jesus, not asking for anything, just surrendering to a presence.
This all sounds quite mystical I'm sure, but the time of stillness and quietude where I'm totally focused on Jesus — in this respect my Roman Catholic relatives have impressed me greatly — for in that quiet I meditate upon Jesus on the cross and what he has gone through and how my sin has caused him suffering and I feel him connecting with me from Calvary and like a sponge absorbing out of me the dirt and the darkness and the ugliness of the dark side of my humanity.
I spend the morning moments getting cleansed, getting purified, and when I say the name Jesus over and over again it's primarily to drive back all the things that I have to do that day. I call it driving back the animals and creating a still place, a thin place, a quiet place where there's nothing around me except the presence of Jesus. And as I yield to him and surrender to him I feel him — and I don't mind using that word feel — I feel him invading me and cleansing me and filling me with himself. And that's what happens to me in the morning. After that I get up and kind of get on with things of the day in quite a pedantic fashion.
Asked "Let's say we look back from the archives of a hundred years from now. What do you want to be written of you? What would you like people to remember you as?", he went back to a day at 40 with three close friends:
When I was 40 I sat down with three of my closest friends and we asked exactly that question. We spent days together off by ourselves just asking: you're 40 years old, you're halfway there. When it's all over and you hang up your sneakers at the end, what would you like to be remembered about? Because we need to define what we want this next several years to mean. And we tried to be very specific. And my answer to the question was simply that I would like them to write on my epitaph these words: he was responsible for challenging 2,000 young men and women to be evangelists and ministers who would lift the burdens of the poor and the oppressed in third-world countries and in urban America. That's what I would like. I would like to be remembered as the guy who challenged a lot of young people to take seriously the claim that Christ would place on their lives to work among the needy.
And later, on what a life's influence really is:
I think there's something more to be learned in all of this, and this is the most significant thing dawning on me: that ninety percent of the good for the kingdom that has come out of my life was good that I did not even realize I was doing. And what I thought was so significant perhaps in the end was not as significant as I thought.
You know, you start a program developing a Christian university in the Dominican Republic. It was a preoccupation with me for about 15 years — putting my time and energy and raising the funds, developing the vision and working so hard. I'm not sure that much came out of all of that, but I continually meet people both in the Dominican Republic and here in the States who were involved in that project. The impact that the effort had on helping them to think in new ways and to explore new opportunities — I'll have young men come up to me and say, you know, I work with you some 15 years ago on that Dominican project. It taught me how to be bold, how to step out, how to risk, how to be daring, how to put up with people who are going to criticize. They were the most important lessons in my life. I never set out to teach those lessons. I set out to start a new university, which incidentally does exist. But it was the side effects of those efforts. It was happening to people who are watching me and interacting with me and who were working with me and helping me. It was the influence that I had on them that was more important than anything that I achieved directly.
You know, in all that you do, you have to recognize that the thing that you're trying to do may or may not work, but there are all kinds of influences that you're exerting in the context of that action that alter the lives of others in significant ways for the kingdom.
Daniel keeps his own version of the morning practice, which he calls helical ascent and hypnopompic time. The trail shows dated sessions begun before dawn or on waking, from "about 4:30 in the morning" (July 27, 2018) to his first morning voice log (May 4, 2026) and a waking vision (August 14, 2026). It's a sample, not a claim about every morning.
For pups: memory fuses; records don't. Daniel's memory joins the two answers into one. The record keeps them apart, and both point the same way: the day begins before the tasks do, and the life is aimed before the days are spent. Quote the record exactly, and keep the owner's memory, labeled as his.
Source: the transcript Daniel published on aiselfmastery.com (October 7, 2026), word for word; his office contact details and a passage about a colleague's illness are left out. Quoted at length at Daniel's direction; the audio stays unposted.
Rights status
The recording claims copyright for Alightintheattic, and the site offered it publicly from 2002 to 2012. No written release from Dr. Campolo has been found. He died November 19, 2024. Before his voice is posted again, Daniel should confirm whether a release exists; if not, the courteous path is the Campolo family or the Campolo Center for Ministry at Eastern University. Until then, this page links out instead of hosting a player.
